Chapter Thirteen

I turned and looked at Killian. "Well, I'd say that's an awfully handy little development."

"I believe so," Killian replied, still a little shell shocked.

Miss Spell gave his hand a friendly squeeze and then went back around her desk again. "And what about you, Ms. MacKay? What brings you to the Know Spell this fine evening?"

"Um... Well... my niece was swapped out with a changeling...?"

She gave an involuntary gasp.

"And we were in my sister's fully warded house when what I think was King Cole snapped us into a time bubble. We think she miiiight be in the Elfin Forest....?" I continued. "If you have any insight into how to fix that problem, there's a lot of people who would be very grateful." I jerked my thumb at Killian. "He said you might be able to help. Made more sense than crashing at my parents' house and waiting for the sun to rise."

She looked at me strangely. "Let's back this up. Maia said that King Cole was captured."

"It appears he got out."

She threw back her head and muttered some sort of prayer to the goddess, but then nodded in acceptance. "He is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. I should have known we couldn't have held him long."

"We escaped, however," I continued. "And I was able to drop us into the Other Side."

"Well, that's impressive."

I pulled out a compass. "It's because of this. I don't know who gave it to me, but I've been told it can help me keep time in Fairy."

"How fascinating," she said, leaning forward. There was a weird exchange between her and Killian. While we tromped through the woods to the elfin capitol, I was going to have to get the full story.

"I was able to bring us here," I continued, "but right now Killian and I are locked inside of a double-death favor."

This time her look at Killian was sharp. "What did you do?" she accused.

"He didn't do anything!" I protested. "I insisted. I bound him to find my niece. And in order to keep me safe, he bound me to the same quest."

"Killian," she said, her lips now pursed together. "That was not a very nice thing to do."

"I did not know if the Queen could have compelled me to work against Maggie," he replied. "It was the only way I could think to keep the MacKay family safe."

Miss Spell shook her head and rose. "You always gotta go doing things the hard way. Couldn't have just done the job. Had to go tearing down some worlds at the same time."

"No worlds have been harmed," Killian pointed out.

"Yet." She hooked her finger at us. "Well, let us see if we can find this niece of yours." She looked at me. "You can't feel her, correct?"

"She is an absolute blank to me," I affirmed. "But it could just be the Queen's power masking her."

"Well, hon, you gotta fight power with power. Let's get going." She grabbed her ruffles and swept out of the door.
